KUCHING, Nov 5: The ferry ramp project along Batang Rajang at Nanga Melipis, Kapit is expected to be completed by December 2026, providing improved river connectivity and benefiting six longhouses in the area, as well as students and teachers of SK Ulu Melipis.
Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted that the RM21.3 million project reflected the government’s continued commitment to enhancing basic infrastructure and connectivity for rural communities in Sarawak.

“I am very happy because this project is clear evidence of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and continuing to strengthen basic facilities for rural people, especially in terms of communication and water transportation in rural Sarawak.
“This ferry facility will not only facilitate the daily affairs of the residents, but also shorten the travel time to schools, health centres and the nearest town.
“It will also open up new opportunities in the socio-economic and educational fields of the local community,” he said in a Facebook post following the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility.

The project, which has been long-awaited by residents, will benefit the communities of six longhouses; Rumah Rambor, Rumah Untat, Rumah Mikai, Rumah Achai, Rumah Sigih and Rumah Mulai.
Nanta also shared that plans are underway to construct new roads along the left bank of the Batang Rajang River leading to the Nanga Yong Bridge, thereby completing the local road and ferry network system.
He expressed hope that all stakeholders, including contractors, technical departments and implementing agencies, would work together to ensure timely completion of the project, ideally ahead of schedule.
Nanta further called on leaders at all levels to continue voicing the needs of rural communities to ensure that every issue and need can be addressed immediately. – DayakDaily
