Multi-agency crackdown nets RM1.82 mln in e-waste, 12 arrested across S’wak

KUCHING, Apr 8: A total of RM1.82 million worth of electronic waste and related equipment was seized, while 12 individuals were detained in a multi-agency crackdown on illegal e-waste activities across Sarawak under Op Hazard 3.0.

According to a report by TVS, the operation carried out by the General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade covered multiple locations, including Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

Its commander Lim Bak Phai said those detained comprised 10 locals and two foreigners suspected of engaging in the collection and processing of electronic waste without complying with licensing requirements and legal provisions.

The seized materials included electrical wires and cables, electronic components, used batteries and tyres, as well as processing equipment. Vehicles and containers believed to have been used in the operations were also confiscated.

He said the operation was aimed at curbing illegal e-waste management activities that could pose risks to the environment and public safety.

The enforcement action involved several agencies, including the Department of Environment, Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, Natural Resources and Environment Board, Sri Aman District Council, Sibu local authorities, Bintulu Development Authority and Miri City Council.

“All suspects and seized materials have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action,” he said, adding that firm action will continue to be taken against those involved in illegal activities. — DayakDaily
