KUCHING, May 17: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who is the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has stepped down from his post as the Kedah Mentri Besar today (May 17).

This follows the change in political landscape in Kedah as two Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) assemblymen. namely Azman Nasrudin and Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee who represented Lunas and Sidam constituencies respectively. jumped ship last Tuesday (May 12) and pledged their support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

As a result, their action has caused the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruled state government.

“With this (resignation) announcement, I relinquish my position (of Kedah MB) with immediate effect,” Mukhriz was reportedly to have said today.

According to national daily The Star, Parti Islam Se Malaysia (PAS). which is aligned to the PN government, is expected to form the next state government in Kedah.

It reported that Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor from PAS is expected to replace Mukhirz as the new Kedah’s Mentri Besar.

It gathered that the 46 year-old Sanusi who is the current PAS elections director as well as chief of its humanitarian arm, PAS Relief will be sworn in before Kedah Ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah today (May 17) at Wisma Darul Aman in Kedah.

Following Sanusi’s announcement last Tuesday (May 12) that 19 out of 36 Kedah assemblymen had lost confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership, speculations were rife that Sanusi who is PAS Kedah deputy chief was the man for the top job after 23 state assemblymen proposed him as the new mentri besar. – DayakDaily
