KUCHING, Aug 14: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposals for political reforms, especially by limiting the tenure of the premiership and banning party-hopping are progressive steps to effectively combat corrupt political practices.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this when he lauded Muhyiddin’s sincerity and commitment to bring about improvement to the local political scene.

“For the longest time, these two issues have been identified as the root cause for corruption in the country yet no political leader, before this, has made any attempt to do something about it.

“Ten years is already a long time for a person to rule a country. It will be dangerous to allow a person to rule longer than that as it will promote kleptocracy. What Tan Sri Muhyiddin did is a testament of his leadership and seriousness to eradicate corruption,” he said.

Also vouching for the proposal to amend the law to speed up the Undi 18 process, Dr Wan Junaidi expressed full support for the formation of a bipartisan collaboration in Parliament to resolve issues concerning the nation, including Covid-19 and the National Recovery Plan.

“This is indeed a step towards the right direction for a healthier and more mature political landscape. Opposition parties should not be viewed as the enemy. Instead, we should engage them so that they too can contribute.

“As such, I am in favour that all Members of Parliament should receive the same annual allocation, regardless of where they stand, politically. I also support proposal that an opposition leader should be accorded with facilities and perks of a senior minister,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Wan Junaidi, who is also a former Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, said the proposal to equally divide chairmanship of Parliamentary Select Committee between government and opposition, amongst others, is a step forward to ensure a check and balance system.

Seeing Muhyiddin’s and Perikatan Nasional (PN)’s reformation proposals as leading to the rest of the previous reformation agendas put forward by Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH), he thus encouraged all Malaysians to support the Prime Minister and PN’s cause in this. — DayakDaily
