KUCHING, Oct 7: Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) Sarawak urges the federal government to insert the clause “pursuant to Malaysia Agreement 1963” in Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution when the Bill to amend the Federal Constitution is tabled in Parliament.
The Muda Sarawak protem committee in a press statement today said by inserting the clause, it will ensure Sarawak’s rights are fully restored in the future.
“We hope this amendment that is to be read in Parliament will produce a continuous effect in the future, as we know this opportunity rarely exist. The Bill to be tabled should focus on an amendment that can bring real change.
“At the very least, we ask for an amendment to Article 1(2) to include ‘pursuant to Malaysia Agreement 1963’ be inserted in the Federal Constitution as it will open up our opportunity to ensure our rights are fully restored in future,” it said.
Muda Sarawak was responding to a statement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar on the federal government’s commitment to amend the Federal Constitution to be in line with Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
It pointed out that the amendment will restore Sabah and Sarawak’ statuses in the Federal Constitution along with fulfilling what had been agreed to in MA63.
Adding on, Muda Sarawak said there were attempts to restore Sarawak and Sabah’s rights in the past but the purpose was to candy-coat the effort to look good and it did not benefit Sarawakians and Sabahans.
Hence, it stressed any effort in restoring Sarawak and Sabah rights should not just be a political gimmick.
Muda Sarawak added it will monitor closely development of the matter and will support any effort in fulfilling MA63 as it will benefit the people of Sarawak.
“Currently, we are working on cross-party efforts with opposition parties in Sarawak to create a ‘United Voice’ that will work closely on making sure the MA63 to be fulfilled soon,” it added. — DayakDaily
