M’sian Malay Contractors Assoc eyes skills push, new building to boost S’wak’s construction sector

KUCHING, March 2: The Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) has announced plans to implement structured training programmes for its members and to construct a new association building in Kuching, with works expected to commence soon as part of efforts to strengthen contractors’ technical capacity and enhance administrative operations in the State’s construction sector.

According to a news report by the Malaysian Information Department (JaPen), PKMM Sarawak together with the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) and the Malaysian Construction Academy Sarawak (ABM) Sarawak paid a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today to strengthen strategic ties with the Sarawak government and discuss capacity building initiatives as well as the direction of the construction industry in the State.

Head of delegation and PKMM Sarawak president Dato Ismail Sut said the visit was aimed at reinforcing collaboration with the State government while outlining development initiatives to support local contractors.

During the meeting, the association informed the Premier that structured training and upskilling courses for its members are being carried out on an ongoing basis in collaboration with CIDB and ABM Sarawak.

“Through these structured training programmes, members will not only enhance their technical skills but also strengthen governance and professionalism within the construction industry,” he said.

Ismail added that PKMM Sarawak had also conveyed its appreciation for the contribution of construction machinery and equipment channelled by the Sarawak government to the association.

“This contribution comprises essential construction equipment that is greatly needed to enhance project implementation capacity.

“The initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to ensuring Bumiputera contractors remain resilient and competitive in an increasingly challenging construction landscape,” he said.

In addition to its training agenda, PKMM Sarawak shared its plan to construct a new association building, which is expected to begin in the near future to further strengthen its administrative and operational capacity in supporting members and advancing Sarawak’s development agenda.

Also present were PKMM Sarawak advisor Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM) Malaysia chairman Dato Ir Alhadi Ibrahim, CIDB senior general manager Suhaimi Mansor, CIDB Sarawak director Ts Br Rosmen AG Hassan and ABM Sarawak chief executive officer Abdul Rahman Ahmad. — DayakDaily
