KUCHING, Aug 21: The threat posed by the latest Covid-19 variant remains low and under control, with only two deaths reported so far in 2025 compared to 58 fatalities throughout 2024.
According to a TVS news report, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said as of Aug 16, 2025, which corresponds with Epidemiology Week 33, Malaysia has recorded a total of 41,814 Covid-19 cases nationwide.
“The figure shows a sharp decrease compared to 83,018 cases reported during the same period last year. Most cases are mild and manageable,” he said when responding to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera) in Dewan Rakyat today on the latest Covid-19 situation and death statistics.
Lukanisman added that the rise in cases observed since April 6, 2025, was linked to changes in subvariants, but stressed that symptoms remain generally mild while existing vaccines continue to provide protection.
He reminded that although Malaysia has entered the endemic phase, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses must remain vigilant as complications could still occur.
“Malaysia is now managing Covid-19 as part of other respiratory infections such as influenza and other viruses.
“Fluctuations in case numbers are normal, but what matters is that the country’s healthcare system is still able to cope and control the situation,” he said.
As part of continuous prevention efforts, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is closely monitoring both domestic and international Covid-19 trends, including genomic sequencing to detect new variants.
Vaccines also continue to be offered voluntarily and free of charge at selected health facilities. — DayakDaily
