KUALA LUMPUR, July 16: Malaysia and Brunei will hold negotiations to facilitate the immigration process to enter and exit both countries.
According to TVS, Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said previously, citizens faced challenges as they had to go through up to eight checkpoints at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Mengkalap, Trusan in Lawas.
He added he would visit Brunei next week to negotiate an agreement regarding the land border clearance process between the two countries.
“There are many checkpoints to go through, as well as the long queues,” he said during the minister’s question and answer time at Dewan Rakyat today.
He was answering Datuk Henry Sum Agong’s (GPS-Lawas) supplementary questions on immigration clearance at the CIQ Mengkalap on the Malaysia-Brunei border.
Meanwhile, he said that the two countries are in the negotiation process to finalise any agreement involving land demarcation and expects the matter to be fully resolved by 2034.
“The field marking and measurement works had been successfully conducted by both countries, covering a distance of 175.96 km or 33.3 per cent of the total length,” he said.
He added that Malaysia will continue to negotiate with Indonesia and Brunei through existing bilateral mechanisms to finalise land and maritime boundaries. — DayakDaily
