KUCHING, Aug 17: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has been tasked with acquiring modern methods for treating and managing domestic waste in Kota Samarahan, says MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos.
According to a statement released by Minos today, MPKS will enforce the rule where scavenging contractors must strictly adhere to the agreed-upon collection schedules of three times per week for towns, two times for villages, and daily for commercial areas.
“MPKS will come down very hard on the negligence or recklessness of the contractors. No compromise here.
“We hold our human waste collection contractors to a similar standard. So far, they have been very professional in their work,” he said.
Today, Minos and MKPS councillors and staff paid a visit to Sar-Alam (Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd), a human waste treatment plant in Jalan Matang here.
He went on to say that MPKS’ priority is to ensure that waste and its disposal do not pose any human or environmental hazards or dangers, either now or in the future.
“Human waste and domestic waste must be effectively managed and treated, or else our environment will become unsanitary, filthy, hazardous, and diseased, posing a threat to public health and the environment.
“In accordance with one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations, people and governments around the globe desire proper and equitable waste management. We at MPKS respect SDG and government policies pertaining to this matter.
“And, of course, we must respect our own MPKS motto: Clean, Green, and Safe Samarahan,” he remarked. — DayakDaily
