KUCHING, March 8: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) and Hock Seng Lee (HSL) Group will work together to hold the first-ever marathon in Kota Samarahan in August to not only promote a healthy lifestyle, but also the tourism and gastronomic offerings of one of the fastest growing areas in this city.
MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said the social event aims to attract more than 3,000 participants from all over Sarawak, including other parts of Malaysia as well as overseas.
“Apart from promoting sports and healthy living, the Samarahan marathon also seeks to make Samarahan more well known and give exposure to the tourism offerings, local cultures and food centres that make the area.
“We are proud that Kota Samarahan is growing and progressing fast, and we want the world to know more about this area that is already well known as an educational hub and upcoming medical hub,” he said in a statement following a preliminary meeting between the council and HSL Group yesterday.
Minos said that Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has also been informed and briefed on the marathon.
“We expect the marathon to be successfully held and hope to make it into an annual social event,” he added.
Noting that traffic congestion is still a problem in the area, especially during peak hours, Minos however looks forward to the completion of the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway upgrading works by November this year.
“Kota Samarahan will witness a second wave development. The next 10 years will be extremely busy and exciting for Kota Samarahan,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
