SIMANGGANG, Feb 26: As the rich, buttery dabai and the heady aroma of durian begin to fade from Sarawak’s markets, another seasonal favourite is stepping into the spotlight; the green mata kucing, known locally as isau manis.

At Sibu Central Market, vendors have started piling the fruit high on their stalls, signalling the start of yet another familiar fruit cycle for shoppers.

“The season just started. These are all from Kapit,” a fruit vendor, Haz, told the D’Drift team.

“There are still more coming in,” he added.

Only weeks ago, the fruit was seen in small quantities. Now, it has become a common sight at markets along Sarawak’s coastal towns, with steady demand from market-goers eager for something fresh as other fruit seasons taper off.

Kakus manis also now selling at the Sibu Central Market.

This variety of mata kucing, scientifically known as Euphoria malaiense, is easily recognised by its pebbled green skin. While its appearance differs from the more widely known longan varieties found across Southeast Asia, the taste is largely the same; sweet and juicy. A brown-skinned type, locally called kakus manis, is also available during the season.

Aside from the isau manis, the salak fruit (snake fruit) is also now in season.

Prices vary depending on size and flesh content. Larger fruits are selling for about RM16 per kilogramme, while smaller ones are priced closer to RM8 per kilogramme.
