BINTULU, Aug 17: Motorists are urged to slow down their vehicles when approaching the newly opened SMK Baru at Jalan Kemena 2 here.

According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang said he was given to understand by school principal Fatimah Wan Adini that vehicles passing by SMK Baru have been speeding especially in front of its main gate.

He said the school is very concerned for the students’ safety when some parents are still not aware of the speed limit.

In terms of physical infrastructure, Pang said he had requested Sarawak Energy Berhad to speed up the installation of street lamps and traffic lights.

“These are for the teachers, students and parents who are sending their children to school early in the morning when the sky is still dark.

“I have also asked the principal to apply to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to install two speed bumps for the safety of the students.

“Although there are already yellow lines drawn, I’m afraid that motorists won’t be able to see them,” he said when visiting SMK Baru on Monday (Aug 15).
