KUCHING, Aug 1: A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed in an accident that occurred at Jalan Kelupu near the Jalan Buan junction in Bintangor at 6am today.
In a statement from the Meradong District Police Headquarters (IPD), the victim, identified as Mohd Rohaizzad Syazwan Abdullah, was riding his motorcycle from Bintangor towards Taman Bintang when a pedestrian, who had been on the left road shoulder, was believed to have suddenly crossed into the motorcycle’s path.
The victim was unable to avoid the pedestrian due to the short distance between them, resulting in the collision.
Following the impact, the motorcycle skidded onto the left road shoulder, while the rider was thrown off and dragged before being pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations also indicate that the accident was caused by the pedestrian’s failure to ensure it was safe before crossing the road.
The police took the victim’s body to Sarikei Hospital for documentation and a post-mortem examination, while the 20-year-old male pedestrian who sustained only minor injuries to his right hand and right leg was taken to the same hospital for further treatment and for blood samples to be taken for alcohol and drug testing.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Members of the public who witnessed the accident or have dashboard camera (dashcam) footage or other relevant recordings are urged to assist the investigation by contacting the Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohd Zainal Abdul Ghafar, at 011-11945095 or by visiting the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, Meradong District Police Headquarters.
