KUCHING, March 16: A mother of two has lodged a police report over what she described as a series of malicious harassment and coordinated accusations by several individuals who allegedly spread false claims that she or someone close to her owes them money.
Michelle Chai said the individuals had repeatedly circulated the allegations through social media and messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, causing distress and affecting her reputation and daily life.
She lodged the police report at Padungan Police Station today, accompanied by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) councillor Eric Tay and Kapitan Kueh Kui Hua.
Chai clarified that she had personally confirmed with her closest family members, including her younger brother, elder sister, mother and husband, that none of them had ever borrowed money from private lenders or unlicensed lending companies.
“If someone in society truly owes a debt, that responsibility lies solely with the individual concerned and has absolutely nothing to do with me,” she said in a statement.
According to Chai, the harassment had been ongoing for some time, but she initially chose to remain patient in hopes that the situation would stop.
However, she claimed the matter escalated when the individuals allegedly sent threatening messages via WhatsApp and circulated the alleged “debt information” to her friends and colleagues, including those involved in political work.
Chai questioned the motives behind the actions, asking whether the individuals were attempting to intimidate her or deliberately launching a political attack to damage trust among people around her and tarnish her reputation.
She said the decision to lodge a police report was made after the situation became intolerable and expressed hope that authorities would conduct a thorough investigation.
Chai also challenged those making the accusations to produce evidence if the claims were genuine.
“If someone truly owes you money, where is the loan agreement? Where is the evidence?” she said.
She added that spreading such allegations without proof not only constituted harassment but could also amount to defamation and criminal intimidation.
Chai also expressed concern for the safety of her family, particularly her two children, following the circulation of threatening messages.
She stressed that if she personally owed anyone money, she would face the matter openly and take responsibility, but criticised attempts to associate alleged debts of others with her without any evidence.
Chai also warned those spreading rumours and harassment to immediately stop such actions or face legal consequences. – DayakDaily
