KUCHING, Sept 21: Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) will form a special committee this year to address the issue involving the declining number of students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Its minister Chang Lih Kang said the issue, which is a cross-ministry issue, has been brought up for discussion at the Cabinet level.
According to Chang, several pre-council sessions had also been held with relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Higher Education (Mohe) including Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Human Resources.
“The committee will reassess the existing initiatives and policies related to STEM learning in Malaysia and then draw up an agenda to strengthen the country’s STEM field for the short, medium and long term,” he said when met by reporters after launching the Sarawak State Level Science Week Carnival and Malaysia Techlympics 2023 Sarawak Zone Level held in Unimas today.
Earlier, Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said Sarawak recorded an increase in the number of participants in the Malaysia Techlympics 2023 with 65,640 as compare to 20,319 in 2022.
He also said that a total of 500 Sarawakian students have also successfully advanced to the Sarawak Zone Level final event.
“They will be competing together to qualify for the National Level Finals event,” he added. — DayakDaily
