KUCHING, Aug 1: The development of the Kuching Buddhist Village is not merely about providing crematorium and columbarium facilities but also serves as a symbol of harmony among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities while supporting the State’s aspiration towards sustainable development.
According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, it integrates elements of spirituality, nature, and community within a single area that reflects the values of unity and sustainable living.
“With its lush greenery, tranquil ponds, and pagodas representing the three main schools of Buddhism, it stands as a symbol of unity in diversity.
“I believe the Kuching Buddhist Village is far more than a crematorium or columbarium. It is a place that brings together spirituality, nature, and community in a harmonious setting,” he said in a speech text read by Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin at the official opening of the Kuching Buddhist Village here today, as reported by TVS.
He added that this reflects Sarawak’s identity, which has long served as an example of harmony among people of different races, cultures, and religions who live together with mutual respect.
Meanwhile, Lee said the provision of accommodation for visiting families, as well as a vegetarian restaurant, also reflects the management’s commitment to the values of compassion, warm hospitality and sustainable living practices.
He said the development is in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which emphasises a balance among economic growth, environmental sustainability, social inclusiveness, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
“True progress is not measured solely by economic achievements, but by our ability to balance development with environmental sustainability, social inclusiveness, and cultural preservation,” he said.
He added that the Kuching Buddhist Village’s emphasis on preserving the natural environment, pursuing environmentally responsible development, and providing space for spiritual well-being aligns with Sarawak’s aspiration to emerge as a leader in green growth and sustainable development.
He expressed hope that the development would continue to serve as a landmark, strengthening community unity while contributing to the well-being of future generations. — DayakDaily
