KUCHING, Nov 25: Bukit Begunan assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang is requesting for the Sarawak government to build more parking spaces in Lachau town.

He said Lachau, which is located along the Pan Borneo Highway, is a popular rest stop and jungle products shopping place for both locals and tourists.

“Pekan Lachau is a melting pot where people from all walks of life meet and where you can basically find almost everything from fresh jungle vegetables, dried fish, handicrafts, antiques and so on.

“Pekan Lachau is also an important trading centre for farmers or traders from across the border, Kalimantan.

“They would bring their farm and jungle products including pepper and rubber for sale at Lachau,” said Mong when debating on the Supply (2023) Bill, 2022 in the august house today.

That is why, he explained, Lachau is always packed with people and motor vehicles, especially during festive seasons such as Gawai, Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Christmas celebrations.

He said the current parking spaces available can no longer accommodate the daily needs of the visiting motorists.

“In view of that, I am requesting for the relevant ministry to seriously consider constructing additional parking spaces at Pekan Lachau.

“There are still available open spaces that could be turned into parking areas,” he added. — DayakDaily
