Mohammad Asfia re-appointed Sarawak DUN Speaker for two more years

KUCHING, Nov 13: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohammad Asfia Awang Nassar has been re-appointed as the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker for a period of two years from Nov 16, 2023 to Nov 15, 2025.

His ninth term as Sarawak DUN Speaker will take effect from Nov 16, 2023, after his eighth term ends on Nov 15, 2023, Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) reported.

Mohammad Asfia was sworn in before Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, at his official residence in Kuala Lumpur today (Nov 13).


During the swearing-in ceremony, Mohammad Asfia signed the oath as Sarawak DUN Speaker for two years.

Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Sarawak Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Deputy State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Dato Idris Buang, and Sarawak Attorney-General (AG) Datu Saferi Ali.

Senior Private Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Dato Khir Busrah and other Sarawak State Heads of Department were also present.

Mohammad Asfia was a law graduate from Leeds University, England and obtained his Barrister-at-Law from Inner Temple, London.

He was also Kuala Rajang assemblyman from 1979 until 1983 and Serdeng/Semop assemblyman from 1991 until 2011.

He was appointed Sarawak Deputy DUN Speaker from 1995 until 2000 before assuming the Sarawak DUN Speaker position on Nov 15, 2000. — DayakDaily
