Miri’s crime index falls by 54 per cent so far this year

MIRI, May 24: Miri division reported a 54 per cent decline in its crime index, from 269 in 2021 to 125 this year from the period of January to April.

This figure involved violent crime and property crime.


On another development, according to Miri OCPD, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, commercial crime cases showed an increase this year, with losses of RM2,535,870 – an increase from RM2,181,954 in 2021.

This year, for the period of January to April, commercial crimes cases showed an increased by 16.22 per cent compared to last year’s figures in the same period he said.

“We saw an increase of 16.22 per cent this year (January to April) or RM353,915,” he said on Tuesday morning when attending the Miri Police Headquarters monthly assembly and pledge recitation.

Meanwhile, 17 people under the supply category for narcotic offences have been detained compared to 50 in the year 2021.

For the ownership (of drugs) category, Miri recorded a drop with 29 people apprehended this year compared to 51 last year, while 178 undergoing urine tests while in 2021, the figure was 389 people.

For the first four months this year (January to April), traffic accidents in Miri surged 23.4 per cent from 593 cases in 2021 to 732.

“The date surged this year compared to the same period of last year following the increases of vehicles during the phase transition from the Movement Control Order to endemic phase,” he said. — DayakDaily
