MIRI, Nov 3: A woman in her late 50’s fell victim to the sweet promise of assistance by two fraudsters on Friday morning.

In the incident, she lost nearly RM3,000 worth of cash and valuables to the female suspects whom she met near the fish market at Jalan Bendahara around 10am.

The two suspects had offered to help her to get social welfare assistance meant for poor famililies under a Miri parliamentary programme.

The two suspects had told the victim that the MP for Miri is giving away assistance to the needy in the form of cash and free rice.

They offered to help the victim to obtain the assistance.

Without thinking too much, the victim complied and got in a car with the suspects, as she was told that they would drive her to the MP’s clinic to claim the assistance.

Upon their arrival at their destination, the victim was told to go inside the MP’s clinic for documentation purposes and claim her aid.

When the victim approached the staff, she was told there was no such assistance given and that she might have fallen victim to conmen.

The victim immediately walked out of the premises to contront the suspects, but it was too late as they had already disappeared in the car, as well as with the victim’s handbag containing her valuebles and cash.
