Miri students shine at World Scholar’s Cup in Shanghai, earn Tournament of Champions spot at Yale University

KUCHING, Aug 18: Eleven students from Miri have brought pride to Sarawak and Malaysia after winning 62 gold medals and 36 silver medals at the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Global Round 2026 in Shanghai, China, recently, according to a TVS news report.

Even more impressively, the achievement saw the Miri representatives place among the competition’s top performers and qualify for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University, United States, this November.

The competition, held from Aug 4 to 14, brought together about 2,000 top students from 30 countries, who competed in four main events—Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Bowl, and Scholar’s Challenge.

The Miri delegation, led and coached by Champs Education, had earlier qualified for the global round through the WSC Singapore Regional Round earlier this year.

In the Super Junior category, Team 479 emerged as the Miri delegation’s best-performing team after securing seventh place in the Overall Team Trophy, as well as fourth place in the Team Scholar’s Challenge, 12th in Team Bowl, and 23rd in Team Debate.

Joshua Lim Jia Soon of Sekolah Menengah Sri Knewton emerged as the 19th Overall Scholar, with a second-place finish in Art & Music, 10th in Scholar’s Challenge, 11th in Literature, and 14th in Special Area.

His teammate, Candace Ling Shi En of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, placed 26th Overall Scholar, while Jerome Lim Jia Rong of Sekolah Menengah Sri Knewton ranked 50th after securing first place in History.

Team 478 also recorded an impressive performance, placing 20th in the Overall Team Trophy, as well as sixth in Team Scholar’s Challenge, 27th in Team Bowl and 29th in Team Writing.

Cherisse Ling Shi Hyun of SK St Joseph was among the team’s main contributors after placing 36th Overall Scholar, including fifth in History and ninth in Art & Music.

Meanwhile, Nathan Wong Sie-En of Riam Hill Secondary School emerged as the best individual scholar from the Miri delegation after placing eighth Overall Scholar in the Super Junior category.

He also secured third place in History, ninth in Art & Music, 16th in Scholar’s Challenge and 17th in Science.

In the Senior category, Team 788 placed 18th in Team Debate, with Constanz Renee Lim and Valencia Lai Yu Tong of Sekolah Menengah Pei Min, as well as Emmeline Tan Zhi Xuan of SMK Chung Hua CF Miri, each contributing outstanding performances.

Beyond the academic competition, the Miri delegation also served as cultural ambassadors for Malaysia and Sarawak by operating two cultural booths featuring traditional games and introducing local snacks and souvenirs.

The students also took part in a Scavenger Hunt at Zhouqiao Old Town, performed at the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre through the Scholar’s Talent Show and attended the Scholar’s Ball at Hyatt Regency Jiading.

With qualification for the world finals now secured, Team Miri is preparing to represent Malaysia at the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University. — DayakDaily
