KUCHING, Feb 21: Miri river is set to become the next waterway in Sarawak to be equipped with a state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), following the implementation of similar systems in Sarawak River and Kuching Barrage.
This move aims to enhance navigation, safety, and operational efficiency in riverine transport.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin highlighted that with Sarawak’s extensive reliance on rivers for transportation, adopting innovative VTMS solutions will significantly improve vessel movement management.
He further noted that Sarawak’s Aids to Navigation (AtoN) systems are undergoing upgrades to bolster maritime safety, streamline traffic management, and improve efficiency in rivers and coastal waters.
“The Sarawak Buoys and Lights an agency under the Ministry, is gradually upgrading and integrating GPS, radar, AIS, Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC), and a Remote Monitoring System (RMS) to provide real-time data on vessel movements, waterway conditions, and environmental factors.
“These advancements aim to reduce accidents, improve navigation, and enhancing overall security and efficiency in river transport,” he said when officiating the Borneo Innovation and Technology Conference (BIT25) at a hotel here today.

Lee underscored that these technological innovations align with Sarawak’s commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation network, supporting the region’s vision for a greener and smarter future.
As Sarawak continues its transformation into a high-income, technology-driven economy under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Lee emphasised the importance of platforms like BIT25 in fostering innovation.
“One of the biggest challenges businesses face in digital transformation is ensuring their workforce is future-ready,” he said.
He noted that initiatives such as BIT25 empower businesses to invest in their employees by equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and networks for growth.
“With technology reshaping industries globally, it is imperative that Sarawak’s workforce is well-equipped with digital solutions to remain competitive.
“Our digital transformation journey is not just about business—it is about creating a more connected, efficient, and sustainable Sarawak,” he concluded. — DayakDaily
