MIRI, Jan 15: The Miri Police is fully prepared to face potential flooding and other risks brought on by the northeast monsoon.

Speaking at the Miri Police monthly assembly today, district’s police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu assured that both manpower and assets were ready to be deployed in response to any emergencies.

“In addition, we are still prepared to face weather changes, namely the northeast monsoon winds, where it can be said that rain will fall every day, causing flooding in several areas within the Miri district. As people on the frontline, we must be sensitive to this situation.

“Our teams will be optimally deployed and will work closely with relevant government agencies,” he said.

ACP Alexson emphasised the importance of readiness in the face of potential flooding, landslides, and other emergencies in the area.

“I hope our police assets, such as boats and outboard engines, are in a ready condition and can be utilised at any time,” he added.

However, he pointed out that the preparedness was not limited to natural disasters but extended to tackling crime and drug abuse.

“I hope that police personnel of IPD Miri, especially those in divisions and stations, will always remain alert to what is happening in their respective areas. Increase crime prevention patrols in areas prone to criminal activity and drug abuse,” he urged.

As the Chinese New Year (CNY) approaches, ACP Alexson also reminded residents to inform their nearest police station or use the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application if they are planning to take long vacations during this festive season.

This would enable police to monitor homes left unattended during the festive period.

“I call on all communities in Miri to cooperate with the police by sharing information. This will enable us to carry out our duties and responsibilities effectively,” he said.

The monthly assembly programme, held at the Miri Police Headquarters (IPD Miri), also saw 14 officers from various ranks being awarded certificates of excellence for their outstanding service.
