Miri landslide victims’ families to receive RM50,000 aid

KUCHING, Jan 30: The families of five victims who perished in the landslide at Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, will receive financial assistance totalling RM50,000.

Sarawak’s Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the aid is intended to help ease the burden of the affected families.

“For the families of the victims who lost their lives in the landslide incident in Miri yesterday, the Sarawak government will provide financial assistance of RM10,000 for each victim,” he said during a press conference after visiting the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa, today.

Meanwhile, Sarawak’s Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said that emotional support will be provided for the survivors.

“For surviving family members, this tragedy has undoubtedly left a profound impact, and they may struggle with emotional distress.

“Therefore, the Social Welfare Department (JKM) will deploy counselors to help them recover emotionally and mentally,” she said.

Also present during the press conference were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali; Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor; and Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Kho Teck Wan.

According to reports, five individuals were killed in the tragic landslide at Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, which occurred at 2.50am yesterday (Jan 29).

The deceased have been identified as Fatimah Dawi, 71; Sazarena Arabi, 41; two young girls, Nur Raisyah Syahirah, 8, and Nur Rania Syafiqah, 11; and a teenage boy, Irsyad Syairah, 16. – DayakDaily
