KUCHING, April 16: A headmaster not wearing face mask and a police station in Miri,  both were found organising activities without compliance to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and slapped with compounds today.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said SDMC would no longer hesitate to take actions against parties disobeying SOPs to avoid similar events from causing more outbreaks in Sarawak.

“Today in Miri, we compounded one of the headmasters for not only not wearing face mask, but also for holding gotong royong (spring cleaning) activities.

“We also compounded a police station in Miri because there were activities disobeying the SOPs.

“So, SDMC will not hesitate in taking such actions because it has come the time for us to be stricter because the spread happened as people continue to ignore the SOPs during funerals, weddings, spring cleaning and so on,” he said during a press conference on Covid-19 update today.

Regarding the upsurge of 295 new Covid-19 cases at Borneo Height’s police training centre near here today, he added, preliminary investigations have found the management of the institution to be negligent towards the SOPs set by SDMC.

Uggah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said strict actions would be taken against the institution once there is proof of negligence by the management.

Seeing the increase of massive clusters due to negligence in Sarawak of late, he said SDMC is looking into tightening the enforcement.

“We hope we can tighten the enforcement. In fact, Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) will be having a discussion with the commissioner of police on Monday, trying to find out how to tighten the enforcement in Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
