KUCHING, Feb 3: The Miri City Council (MCC) has proposed the development of a large water theme park in Kenyalang Smart City, aiming to boost tourism and establish Miri as a leading regional destination.
The proposal came after a courtesy visit by a delegation from Thinker Cultural Tourism Operator Water Theme Parks from China, according to TVS news.
Miri Mayor Datuk Adam Yii Siew Sang said the meeting highlighted significant investment potential in tourism and entertainment, including the creation of an international-standard water theme park.
“Within a two-hour travel radius from Miri, there are over one million residents. With the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway, we have the potential to attract visitors from Sibu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and neighboring areas,” he said in an interview at MCC headquarters yesterday (Feb 2).
Yii added that investors plan to develop up to 500 hotel rooms and other supporting facilities, which would further stimulate tourism and local economic growth.
He noted that the Chinese delegation views Miri as a strategic location with strong potential to host Borneo’s only large-scale water theme park.
“We hope the investors’ feasibility studies will pave the way for the project, positioning Miri as a tourism hub and driving economic growth in northern Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
