MIRI, Dec 17: Miri has become the pioneer city in Malaysia to implement the country’s first Bus Signal Priority (BSP) system, a smart traffic management initiative that reduces waiting times at intersections, smooths traffic flow, and significantly improves the punctuality of bus service schedules.

The milestone was marked with the launch of BSP operations for the Smart Bus Service in Miri, underscoring the Sarawak government’s continued push to transform public transportation through technology-driven solutions.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative aligns with the State government’s commitment to strengthening urban mobility, enhancing the efficiency of public services, and supporting sustainable development.

“Traffic congestion is a global challenge that affects productivity and the quality of life of the people. Therefore, public transport must become the backbone of an efficient and inclusive urban mobility system,” he said when speaking at the launch ceremony on Tuesday (Dec 16).

He explained that the BSP system enables buses to be given priority at traffic light intersections through intelligent signalling technology, allowing for smoother journeys, reduced delays, and more reliable service schedules for commuters.

Lee also noted that the Sarawak government had earlier introduced 14 smart buses in Miri, opened the Miri Sentral Bus Terminal, and launched the Sarawak Smart Transport application to provide the public with easier access to information on public transport services.

Also present at the event were Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) Land Transport and Logistics head Ts Chong Chi Fam, Sarawak Road Transport Department director Norizan Jili, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Miri Branch head Elizebeth Mayang Thomas, and Public Works Department (JKR) Miri Division engineer Ir Stephen Ung Neng Hui. — DayakDaily
