MIPD: MPA issues to be addressed immediately

KUCHING, March 5: The Sarawak Government through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) will look into issues at the Miri Port Authority (MPA).

According to a news report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development II Dato Majang Renggi said his ministry will come up with short-term measures to address the issues arises.

“MIPD will support and look closely at the issues as briefed,” he said in a statement after a work visit to MPA on Friday (March 4).


During the visit Majang was also briefed by MPA general manager Serawa Budol regarding the shallow access channel at the Kuala Baram rivermouth.

Majand said in order for the port to be competitive and able to attract investors to come to Sarawak, the port needs to find a way and formulate its own strategy in order to meet the needs of the industry to facilitate trade.

He pointed out that this includes the possibility of extending the port limit to allow it to handle cargo entering Sarawak.

He also gave his assurance that MIPD will support LPM to achieve its vision and mission to be a catalyst for the economic development in the Northern region of Sarawak, especially Miri.

“Ports play a very important role in the economic development of the region. It serves as a gateway for import and export activities to the region,” he said. — DayakDaily
