KUCHING, Oct 25: Past experiences have taught Sarawak lessons in not simply accepting promises from Malaya as far too many promises have gone unfulfilled, says political pundit Dato Peter Minos.
According to a statement, many promises have been made by Malayan leaders and political parties from as far back as 1963, which he said were all just ‘mere words’.
“We still have not gotten back all our powers (as enshrined) in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Promises to help Sarawak with development were broken. Even projects that were approved were cut off.
“Now they are trying to hoodwink Sarawak’s voters by promising a deputy prime minister (DPM) post after GE15 (15th General Election). Until it happens, it is merely an empty promise. I go along with what our Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) said — that if a DPM post is given to Sarawak, it must be with real powers as just the name and status will not do,” he said.
Minos also recalled the last round of the election, when it was said that political manifestos were not like bibles that had to be followed and abided by religiously.
“We must not accept any promises from KL (Malaya) side too easily as many promises made were broken or forgotten at will. We better stand on our own feet and unite fully under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to talk and bargain with KL. We must not be hoodwinked by empty promises anymore — enough is enough.” — DayakDaily
