KUCHING, Sept 14: Minister of Communication and Digital (KKD) Fahmi Fadzil wants the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to examine the need for online and social media platforms such as TikTok, Google and Meta to register and be licenced to operate in the country.
Fahmi said this matter was brought up after a recent discussion with MCMC and the three tech giants.
He added that there is a need to consider a mechanism for these operators to contribute to the media industry in Malaysia.
“We see that a lot of our content produced by media organisations in Malaysia are being used by these three platforms in their social media, but yet the return to our media is very little,” he said.
He told reporters this after presenting ‘Sumbangan Kasih@Hawana 2023’ to Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) staff Irwan Budi Annuar, who is on medical leave at the latter’s home at Sourabaya Indah Kuching today.
Fahmi wants MCMC to examine this issue to ensure that the media ecosystem in Malaysia is stable and healthy.
“We are not helping only our reporters and the staff of the media organisations but the whole of our media industry itself,” he said.
On Hari Wartawan Nasional (Hawana) 2024 which is expected to be held in Kuching next year, Fahmi said there are details which are yet to be finalised and not until after Malaysia Day on Sept 16. — DayakDaily
