KUCHING, June 24: Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi is urging the younger generation to behave in a civil manner on social media and not to abuse their democratic right of expression by spreading hate and baseless allegations.
He said with social media, it has been easy to express one’s frustrations, to insult and to make unsubstantiated accusations.
“We are supposed to be more modern, more informed. We are supposed to be a more educated younger generation.
“(Then) Be educated! Don’t use social media to simply express your frustrations without regard for the truth, or without regarding what can be damaging. It is not right even though democratically you have the right of expression.
“It is not right to cause problems by expressing hate, by ‘fitnah’ which means baseless allegations, (accusations) not based on the truth. So my advice to the younger generation is, you have your right in a democratic country but be responsible.
“If you want to criticise, by all means, criticise, but based on facts,” said Nanta at the 60th Anniversary of Sarawak’s Independence Celebration held in Kapit last night following the arrival of the Celebration Convoy which comprises of more than 1,000 vehicles and over 2,000 participants, who have traversed across 60 districts and 12 divisions.
He expressed gratitude that Kapit, though remote, has been included in the programme of the convoy.
Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said it was a befitting decision as one of the founders of Malaysia, Tun Jugah Barieng was from Kapit.
He reminded those present at the celebration that they must not only know historical facts, but understand the spirit behind the history. — DayakDaily
