KUCHING, Sept 14: Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil plans to engage in discussions with the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) to explore the possibility of expanding social security benefits and guarantees, particularly for part-time media personnel or stringers.
Fahmi acknowledged the increasing use of stringers by media companies and expressed concern about their limited social and health benefits compared to full-time employees.
He emphasised the need to address this issue and plans to meet with SOCSO in the coming week to explore potential solutions.
The minister made these remarks during a press conference after presenting ‘Sumbangan Kasih@Hawana 2023’ to Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) staff Irwan Budi Annuar, who is on medical leave.
The fund, established by Hawana, aims to assist individuals in the media industry facing challenges due to unforeseen circumstances.
Fahmi noted that his ministry is committed to addressing the challenges faced by media personnel and expressed the importance of understanding the diverse issues affecting them.
He stressed the need for sustainable solutions and hopes that the ‘Hawana Fund’ can provide assistance to those in need.
To date, Irwan is the 20th selected media personnel to receive a donation from the Hawana fund, a programme organised by Persatuan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Perwarta) in collaboration with the Information Department Malaysia (JAPEN), Berita Nasional (BERNAMA), and Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas). — DayakDaily
