KUCHING, Nov 18: The Sarawak government and Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) have reached a consensus which outlines the Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) and is expected to be signed by this December 31.
Sarawak Minister of Transport (MOTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that upon the signing of the SPA, the transfer of MASwings’ ownership from MAG to the Sarawak government will take between six to nine months.
“During this transition, MASwings will continue operating Rural Air Services (RAS) while securing necessary licenses and approvals from the Malaysia MOT, Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM), and Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to expand internationally,” said Lee during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
After acquiring MASwings, the Sarawak government aims to position it as a regional carrier within a four to seven-hour flight range, establishing Sarawak as a gateway for regional air travel.
“This aligns with Sarawak’s vision to enhance its profile as an international destination and attract foreign investment, with improved connectivity playing a key role in these efforts,” he said. — DayakDaily
