KUCHING, Sept 1: Emphasising English language education highlights the Sarawak government’s clear commitment to advancing and developing the State, according to Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Nanta, who is the Work Minister and Kapit MP, stressed that for Sarawak to advance and progress, knowledge-based human resources are essential.
“To achieve this, education in schools is crucial to ensure that Sarawakians are equipped with the right knowledge,” he stated.
Nanta clarified that the emphasis on the English language is not a sign of being unpatriotic or neglecting Bahasa Melayu, the national language. Instead, it is a recognition of the importance of the English language in today’s globalized world.
“In Sarawak, English is used as the second official language,” he noted.
Moreover, the Sarawak government has announced plans to establish five international schools.
This decision is based on the understanding that a strong command of English, along with associated skills, is vital for the state’s development, particularly in terms of embracing modern technologies.
“We need highly skilled individuals in vocational training, and we cannot achieve that without proficiency in the English language,” Nanta explained.
In essence, Sarawak’s government places great importance on the state’s education system, recognising that English proficiency is not merely about language but is also a universal tool, especially in fields like science. — DayakDaily
