Minister: Proposed relocation for Samarahan welfare dept to improve service following viral issue

Dato Sri Nancy Shukri

KUCHING, Dec 15: Samarahan Social Welfare Department (JKM) was recently in hot water after a Facebook post went viral, criticising the staff’s unsatisfactory service.

“Nevertheless, we have to consider that the department itself is trying its best to cater to the overcrowded visitors, with only two counters in operation in the small premises,” said Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.

The Malaysian Minister of Women, Family and Community Development said these factors may affect the spirit or emotional state of the staff and visitors alike.

“I was informed that there is a plan by the State government for the JKM Samarahan (where) they will shift elsewhere because we are aware that the current premises are too small and the demand for service is very high.

“Therefore, we cannot blame people for getting angry because of such a situation,” she said at a press conference after officiating Yayasan Petronas’ aid presentation held at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) today.

Nancy, who is also Santubong MP, further hoped that with JKM Samarahan’s upcoming relocation, there will be an improvement in their service to the local community.

“These cases happen everywhere, and we understand that the staff are also human beings. However, on our part, we do not want to normalise this kind of behaviour.

“We need to understand those who need our service, and we need to have patience in serving them,” she added.

A few days ago, a Facebook post criticising JKM Samarahan staff’s service went viral.

However, JKM Samarahan has clarified that the misunderstanding between both parties has been resolved, and the original Facebook account owner has deleted the post. — DayakDaily
