KUCHING, Aug 17: Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has praised the inclusivity of Starbucks Malaysia in their effort to empower the deaf community with the launch of the Starbucks Signing Store in Vivacity Megamall today.
She said employment is very much lacking among the deaf community in Sarawak, and such a project undertaken by Starbucks at the new store was very important.
“This tactful project will be able to give them (the deaf community) the income, to live independently and earn a living in our community,” she said at the launch of the Starbucks Signing Store.
This store marks a significant milestone in the market as the third Signing Store in Malaysia, after Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
The store aims to uplift the local community by fostering inclusivity and celebrating the vibrant culture of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
Since its soft launch on July 27, 2023, the store has seen an overwhelming and positive response from its customers.
Fatimah elaborated that her ministry is still concerned about the disadvantages faced by the needy group in our society in getting employment.
She also opined that only through early medical intervention, rehabilitation and education that those with disabilities may have the opportunity of gaining employment.
“It is through education that we can change the life of our children, including the disabled,” she said.
Fatimah said job opportunities made possible by corporate bodies like Starbucks will make a huge difference in the deaf community.
“The trust and the confidence you have in them will be repaid back many fold in loyalty, and they will give their best to carry out their responsibilities,” she added. — DayakDaily
