KUCHING, Nov 3: A total of 38 out of 880 ongoing construction projects nationwide have been classified as sick projects as of Oct 31, involving a current project cost of RM2.080 billion.

According to Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, 77 per cent of the project delays were attributed to weaknesses in contractors’ management, including poor work planning and coordination at construction sites, insufficient manpower, and issues involving machinery and construction material supplies.

The remaining 23 per cent were caused by other factors, including utility relocation, land acquisition, limited site access, constraints in construction material supplies, rising diesel prices, and technical issues.

“To address these issues, the Ministry of Works, through the Public Works Department (JKR), is stepping up its efforts by tightening regular monitoring of projects’ physical progress, implementing early interventions and preparing recovery plans, coordinating solutions to resolve issues with relevant parties, and referring projects to the Project Solving Governance (PSG) Committee to determine appropriate recovery measures,” he said in a Facebook post.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said that six projects have also been referred to the Contract Coordination Panel (CCP) and are currently undergoing contract termination proceedings, demonstrating the government’s seriousness in addressing sick projects.

He assured that his ministry and JKR will continue to strengthen monitoring and intervention measures to ensure development projects are completed in an orderly manner and that the people can enjoy the benefits of development. — DayakDaily
