KUCHING, May 12: The Samarahan Marathon has the potential to be included as an international event under the Association of International Marathon (AIM), opined Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

According to Abdul Karim, Sarawak has two marathon events that are recognised internationally, namely the Kuching Marathon and the Miri Marathon.

“For the Samarahan Marathon, I believe it can accepted as an international event because it is well organised and receives good responses from runners.

“I hope the organiser can apply for this event to be included in AIM to promote it not only in Sarawak but at the international level too,” he told reporters after the HSL Samarahan Marathon prize-giving ceremony held at La Promenade Mall in Kota Samarahan today.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said he looks forward to the HSL Samarahan Marathon becoming a yearly event in Sarawak, adding that his ministry would help to provide the necessary financial assistance for the organisation.

“For this year’s event, I know that Hock Seng Lee and the organisers have not asked for assistance from my ministry. This is what gives me joy.

“Not that we don’t want to help, but when the organisers are able to organise it independently without help from the government, I salute you,” he added. — DayakDaily
