KUCHING, June 21: Cambodia Airways is set to launch its inaugural flight from Phnom Penh to Penang starting June 26, says Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

In a Facebook post, he said that this new direct route will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, using the Airbus A319 aircraft with a capacity of 150 seats.

“This will increase interconnectivity between both countries and offer new opportunities for tourism, business, and the exchange of cultures, as well as to promote Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026.

“At the same time, I will also encourage Cambodia Airways to add more direct flights,” he said.

He said this following a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, recently.

During the courtesy visit, both leaders also discussed pursuing new opportunities to expand tourism cooperation between Malaysia and Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, attended a dinner with industry players to promote the VMY 2026 campaign.

In his speech, he emphasised the relationship between the two nations and its importance, particularly in the tourism, arts, and culture sectors, as well as the fact that both are part of ASEAN.

“Tourism is one of the key drivers of economic growth, cultural understanding, and community empowerment.”

“As the world returns to action after a brief pause due to the pandemic, it is essential to have an effective strategy to achieve what is desired for the benefit of the people of both countries.

“Malaysia offers a rich diversity of experiences—from the vibrant streets of Kuala Lumpur to the stunning beaches of Langkawi, the cool climate of the Cameron Highlands, and the lush rainforests of Borneo.

“In line with that, I encourage all industry players, investors, and policymakers in Cambodia to collaborate in expanding air connectivity, creating attractive travel packages, and streamlining visa access for travellers,” he said. — DayakDaily
