KUCHING, March 26: Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has urged the police to conduct an immediate investigation on an incident involving a Dayak sales person who was verbally abused and threatened with handcuffs over a 50-cent coin.
He strongly condemned the action and described it as inhumane and a violation of the principle values of the Rukun Negara.
“Even more disappointing, this incident also involved racially charged words that should not exist in our multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
“Every individual in this country has the right to be respected regardless of their ethnic background, religion, or social status,” Aaron said in a statement, according to a news report by TVS.
He emphasised that his ministry would not compromise with any form of insult against any race in this country, and actions of a racist and uncivilised nature like this need to be addressed seriously.
Aaron also urged the police to conduct an immediate investigation and take appropriate action against the individuals involved in the incident.
“I would also like to remind all Malaysians to continue maintaining the harmony and unity that we have long built.”
“Every individual has an important role in ensuring that this country continues to progress with love, respect, and mutual understanding,” the statement added.
According to Facebook posts shared by netizens, the incident occurred when a female sales assistant at an ice cream shop in Central i-City Shah Alam was verbally abused and threatened with handcuffs – simply for asking a customer to pay an additional 50 cents on an ice cream order.
Racially charged remarks were also thrown at the sales assistant, reportedly from Miri, Sarawak. – DayakDaily
