SRI AMAN, April 9: The public has been urged not to engage in panic buying of rice, as supplies are expected to remain sufficient at least until the end of this year.

In a TVS news, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said there are currently no issues affecting rice supply, and consumers are encouraged to purchase according to their actual needs.

“Let me reiterate, God willing, our rice supply will remain stable at least until the end of this year at current prices. There is no need for panic buying,” he said.

Mohamad made the remarks during a press conference following the launch of the Sarawak Rice Wave Programme: Smart Large-Scale Paddy Fields (Smart SBB) and the IADA Batang Lupar Customer Day 2026 today.

He noted that recent rice demand in Sabah was not due to panic buying but other factors, as rice prices in Malaysia are comparatively lower than in neighbouring countries.

“There were minor issues, but these have already been resolved,” he added.

He warned that panic buying could disrupt market stability and create opportunities for price manipulation.

The government continues to monitor rice supply and prices closely, including in Sabah, where minor supply disruptions had been reported previously. — DayakDaily
