KUCHING, April 6: Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) in Sibu has been urged to go beyond contentment with its current status and take bold steps toward becoming a full-fledged university.
In making the call, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, stated that MPI has enormous potential to grow through closer collaboration with the State government.
“I want you to become a full university. Why settle for what you have now? Let us work together and see how the government can support this effort.
“We cannot build Sarawak alone; unity is needed from all parties. We must lay a strong foundation so that the younger generation can continue to succeed and carry forward our mission,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), at MPI’s 35th Anniversary Dinner last night (April 5).
Highlighting MPI’s forward-looking vision, Dr Sim, who also serves as Sarawak’s Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said the institute had been providing tertiary education for 35 years, long before higher education became a priority in State policy.
“MPI has been providing forward-looking tertiary education for decades, setting an example for the State’s current efforts,” he added.
Reflecting on the contributions of missionary schools, Dr Sim noted that such institutions have produced top talents, including the State’s highest leadership.
He revealed that since the formation of Malaysia in 1963, all six individuals who have served as Chief Minister (now Premier) were alumni of missionary schools, specifically St. Joseph’s School.
“Over the past 35 years, MPI has not just offered degrees, but also nurtured ethical and responsible graduates. That is why your graduates are highly sought after — for the discipline and integrity instilled in them,” he stressed.
The anniversary dinner was also attended by Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC) Board President Lau Hui Ming and MPI Board Chairman Paul Wong Hee Kwong. — DayakDaily
