KUCHING, Oct 4: The Methodist Iban Church Kuching today received a grant amounting to  RM1 million from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) for its church’s upgrading project.

Unifor director Richard Lon said the RM1 million is the first phase of grant, which is included in the total grant of RM2.5 million, about 50 per cent of the total estimated cost of RM4.5 million for the church’s upgrading project.

“Another RM1.5 million will be given out depending on the progress of the project. The committee and the church members are expected to spend the funds accordingly and must also submit their report of the project every three months to Unifor,” he said in his speech during the Unifor Cheque Presentation ceremony held at a local hotel, here today.

Richard, who is representing Deputy Chief Minister and minister-in-charge of Unifor Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, also reminded the church members to work together and continue their fundraising programmes to ensure the project will be implemented smoothly.

“Do not slow down on doing your fundraising for the project, and work together, because all the concerted efforts are needed to ensure the project is a success,” he added.

The Methodist Iban Church Kuching upgrading project was estimated to cost about RM4.5 million and is slated to be carried out for the next two years.

Upon completion, the upgraded premises in Pisang Road here would house a sanctuary seating for 500 congregants, parsonages, Sunday School and clergies office.

As of September this year, the church managed to raise more than RM100,000 through the contribution of its members. –DayakDaily.
