MIRI, June 8: On June 1, the Iban community of Rumah Bunda Lubuk Kelambu in Ulu Teru celebrate a significant cultural event—the ‘Meri Anak Mit Mandi’ bathing ceremony.
This initiation rite, which has not been observed since 2013, was held to bless three of Pemancha Enggah Muga’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Ivan Ian Franklyn (aged one), Aditya Lee Thinesh (aged two), and Kavishashini Pavithran (aged three).
Pemancha Enggah Muga, a respected leader in the Iban community of the Beluru district, explained the importance of the ritual held at Sungai Teru, which is believed to bring good fortune to the children.
Starting around 9.30am, the event drew numerous longhouse residents eager to witness and participate in the revival of this traditional practice.
The bathing ceremony began with a procession to Sungai Teru, where the children were ceremoniously bathed in the river.
This act symbolises purification and the bestowing of blessings for health, prosperity, and a harmonious life. Participants and observers alike wore full Iban traditional attire, adding to the ceremony’s vibrancy.
The ceremony not only honoured the young children but also reinforced the community’s commitment to their traditions.
It was a day of celebration, community bonding, and cultural pride, ensuring that the values and traditions of the Iban people remain alive and vibrant. — DayakDaily
