KUCHING, Aug 23: In a world where sports often focus on records and victories, it is essential to recognise the media’s commitment to highlighting the human side of the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma), where their impactful storytelling reminds people of the true essence of sports—connecting people, inspiring hope, and celebrating the indomitable human spirit.
Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol emphasised that during a Cabinet meeting yesterday (Aug 22), Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged the media’s instrumental role in showcasing the human side of the games.
“Beyond the scores, medals, and statistics, the creativity and dedication of journalists and photographers in capturing the human stories of athletes overcoming personal challenges, and the inspiring tales of camaraderie and sportsmanship, have had a profound impact on our communities,” he said during a press conference after presenting prizes to winners of Pictures and Articles of The Day at the Sukma Media Centre near Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre today.
He highlighted a poignant example shared by the Premier, where a TikTok post featured a Terengganu athlete embracing his coach after winning a gold medal. The cameraman was fortunate to capture that moment and the story behind it.
“This is the human side of sports that leaves a lasting impact. Every success has a story behind it, filled with moments of joy, sorrow, friendship, and bonds that reflect altruistic values and virtues. These narratives resonate deeply with Sukma’s theme of ‘Semangat Perpaduan Membara’,” he added.
Abdullah also cited the coverage of athletes like diver Elvis Priestley, whose journey to winning two golds and one silver is a testament to the family’s unwavering support, which is an experience shared by many athletes.
“These feel-good stories capture narratives that go beyond mere reporting. They humanise the athletes and should be highlighted alongside the fierce competition, sensational action, and challenges of a sporting event.
“We appreciate all the media for bringing these human-interest stories to the masses during such a prestigious national sports event. I learned a lot from this Sukma event. If we open our eyes and ears, there is much to learn from the athletes’ dedication, sacrifice and discipline in their pursuit of glory,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) is planning an appreciation ceremony to honour the dedication of all media practitioners and organisations following the conclusion of Sukma 2024.
The ceremony will also feature a prize presentation for a photography and writing competition, with winners receiving RM2,000 for the first prize, RM1,000 for the second prize, and RM500 for the third prize.
Meanwhile, in today’s prize presentation for submissions between August 13 and 21, nine winners were selected in the Picture of The Day category, while eight winners, including Shikin Louis from DayakDaily, were recognised in the Article of the Day category.
Shikin was honoured for her article titled ‘Chess Debuts in SUKMA 2024; Sarawak Humbly Aims for 1 Gold, 1 Bronze Medal’. The winners received RM100 cash prizes each.
