KUCHING, July 31: The Sarawak media fraternity is planning a special programme at Heroes’ Monument Park as a mark of respect and appreciation for the sacrifices of Malaysian Armed Forces and police veterans.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department for Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, said the initiative will be carried out in collaboration with media associations and government agencies such as Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), RTM and the Information Department.

He explained that the idea is to bring together media personnel and veterans in a simple gathering, possibly beginning in Kuching, to commemorate Warriors’ Day and honour the contributions of former servicemen.

“We want to organise a programme at this Heroes’ Monument as a symbol of remembrance and appreciation from the Sarawak media community for the sacrifices made by our armed forces, police and retired service members.

“We will hold discussions soon with relevant stakeholders to coordinate the event, which is expected to involve veteran associations as well,” he said when met after attending the Warriors’ Day Assembly 2025 at Taman Budaya this morning.

On behalf of media practitioners in Sarawak, Abdullah also took the opportunity to wish a Happy Warriors’ Day to all veterans, whether still serving or retired, who had sacrificed to safeguard not only the country’s independence, but also its peace and freedom, particularly in Sarawak.

He highlighted one of the key messages conveyed during the assembly by representatives of veterans’ associations: that the spirit of former warriors and freedom fighters must continue to be inherited and upheld today.

“Their courage and sacrifice were driven by sincerity and love for the country. That patriotic spirit must remain strong among all Sarawakians regardless of race or religion, to preserve peace and unity,” he added.

Abdullah emphasised that the peace and harmony enjoyed today are the result of the sacrifices made by past warriors. Thus, Warriors’ Day should be celebrated in a spirit of appreciation for those who have served and continue to inspire with their unwavering spirit, even in retirement.

The Warriors’ Day Assembly was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also laid a wreath at the monument on behalf of the Sarawak government in honour of all fallen heroes.
