MIRI, Aug 30: Miri City Council (MCC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Curtin University Malaysia to transform the city into an Age-Friendly City and Community (AFCC) in accordance with the United Nations Principles for older persons.
The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday at the city hall.
Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang represented MCC, while pro vice-chancellor and chief executive officer of Curtin University Malaysia, Professor Simon Leunig, represented the university.
According to Yii, the signing of the MOU between MCC and Curtin University Malaysia marks the initiation of this significant collaboration for a five-year period.
The AFCC implementation will involve a baseline assessment, during which Curtin will hold discussions and surveys for data analysis.
Based on this data analysis, Curtin will recommend a strategy and Action Plan to MCC. This will enable MCC to create a comprehensive strategy and action plan, secure approval, support, and resources for implementation.
“There will be an evaluation of the cooperation and collaboration in works towards this,” Yii pointed out.
He added that the United Nations principles for older persons outline actions for an aging population, encouraging governments to incorporate the principles of independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment, and dignity for older persons.
“Currently, 1,333 cities in 47 countries are implementing AFCC under the WHO Global Network for AFCC,” he mentioned.
“MCC acknowledges the issue of population aging in Sarawak, including here in Miri, and the significance of devising a plan for the well-being of the people in Miri. In light of this, we have sought and finally found a smart partnership for implementing AFCC,” Yii added.
Former deputy chief minister of Sarawak and Pro-Chancellor of Curtin University (Curtin Malaysia), Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Georgeo Chan, along with his wife Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enam Muloon, were also present at the MOU signing ceremony. — DayakDaily
