KUCHING, Feb 4: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will penalise the driver who damaged a traffic light and streetlight in a car accident during the Chinese New Year holiday.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said a police report had been lodged on the case, which he did not specifically identify.

“We will penalise the driver, making it the first of such cases (that the council will take action on), which will serve as our study case.

“This is the second accident involving damage to public property, and one crash could cost (the council) at least RM10,000 in losses,” he said during his ShallWEETalk live session with the community today.

Even though the council can claim insurance, Wee believed that motorists should be held accountable for damaging public property in car accidents.

“No matter if the accident is unintentional, I think people need to be responsible for their own actions and the consequences.

“First, this will serve as a lesson for all motorists to abide by traffic laws and regulations. Secondly, we want people to always practice careful and mindful driving to keep our roads safe and to protect other road users,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
