KUCHING, June 17: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will organise hospitality service courses to upskill hawkers and improve their services.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said hawkers are like ambassadors for the community and the city.
This is due to the nature of hawker centres in Sarawak being the avenue that brings the relationship among the people closer and highlights the harmonious coexistence of multiracial groups in the State.
However, he pointed out that the hawkers must keep their pace with the present times and preserve the industry by improving food innovation and so on.
“I hope there will be dedicated personnel to help promote and lead this industry to internationalisation.
“The hawker industry not only brings substantial effects to urban development but also facilitates shopping for citizens, relieves employment pressure and enhances social creativity and cash flow capacity.
“Don’t underestimate the hawker industry because they also contribute to the household’s income, and it is also one of the ways for entrepreneurs to make a living,” he said during the Kuching and Samarahan Division Hawkers Association’s 66th Anniversary Celebration earlier tonight.
The event also saw the installation of the new committee of the Kuching and Samarahan Division Hawkers Association for the 2023-2024 term.
Malaysian Federation of Hawkers and Petty Traders Associations president Voon Chin Leong, the Kuching and Samarahan Division Hawkers Association’s president Chang Hot Chai, and the event’s organising chairman Lee Pui Siong were among those present at the event. — DayakDaily
