KUCHING, Sept 17: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will enforce a total ban on plastic straws at all eating outlets under its jurisdictions beginning Jan 1, 2023.
MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the coming few months would be the last period for operators to accommodate the ban.
He also said that on Oct 18, the council is holding a communication session with food and beverage operators to discuss related matters.
“I hope for everybody’s cooperation. So far, the hawker centres and markets are very supportive of this initiative.
“This is thanks to their civic-mindedness, consideration for the environment, and love for the planet.
“So, I thank all of them for their sacrifices and contributions,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live session today.
Wee said the plastic straw ban results would not be immediate, but the generations to come will appreciate the efforts done today.
He also reminded coffee shop and eatery operators that their operating licenses would be revoked without compromise should the council catch them using plastic straws after three warnings. — DayakDaily
